Wind Surfing in Mauritius

Due to the lagoon’s crystal clear water, windsurfing opportunities are enormous almost everywhere in Mauritius with the exception of the south where the lagoons are somewhat hallow during the low water levels.

With the exceptional kite-surfing fever, today the number of Kite-surfers exceeds that of wind-surfers’ schools in Mauritius.  Even though strategically located hotels offer wind surfing equipment to its guest for free, the quality of their equipment doesn’t match the basic requirements of a wind surfer. And only the club Mistral center in Le Morne has more wind surfing equipment than kites for rent. The center prides in its professional coaches plus rescue boats that are strategically located immediately opposite the riding areas in Le Morne.

Le Morne remains the leading surfing area in Mauritus because of its regular winds. However Mauritius as a whole numerous accessible spots open to the public like the Ansse La Raie on the northern coast plus many more on the eastern shoreline.

Wind and climate conditions

Wind surfing conditions are more conducive through the winter austral months of June through to November.  Below are the detailed kite surfing conditions in Mauritius:

During the austral months from June through to November, the island is experiences the South Eastern Trade Winds that are formed by a trail of anti-cyclonic cells from the glacial belt, stirring from the West to the Right. Due to the winds’ position at the rim of the path, the winds on the island experience cycles for seven days.  While the cold front advances, it picks from the south or South East wind for one day, intensifying to strength of twenty to twenty five knots to the south eastern direction for the following three days. From there it rotates east in a restrained temperance of sixteen to eighteen knots for the following two days. In general, there is almost one windless day amid the two anti-cyclones.

Choosing a region
