Free kitesurfing in Mauritius

Wind and climate conditions

Kite-surfing can be done all through the year in Mauritius and is open to both locals and visitors although the best time to enjoy this activity is during the austral months of winter between June to November. In addition, to wholly benefit from the conducive conditions, you should be well prepared to take a drive around the gorgeous island and choose the spot the suit your desired conditions.

Below are the general kite-surfing conditions.

In the austral months between June and November, the island is affected by the South Eastern Trade Winds that are generated by the trail of anti-cyclonic cells from the glacial belt that are stirring from the West to the Right. Due to the winds position at the rim of the path, the winds in the island experience cycles for seven days.  As the cold front advances, it picks from the south or South East wind for one day, hence intensifying to strength of 20 to 25 knots to the south eastern direction for the next three days. From there it rotates east in a moderate temperance of 16 – 18 knots for the following two days. Generally, there is just one windless day between the two anti-cyclones.

During the summer solstice of December plus January, a related pattern is observed from the East to the North East direction with wind strength of 10 – 15 knots all through the days. Although the wind seems to be indecisive, this is the most pleasurable time for kite-surfing. The days are much longer than, the sea is quite warm and because of the nature of the terrain, there is subsequent hastening of wind in some places like the Le Morne hence offering the great wind on a flat terrain which are all conducive for riding.

Choosing a region

Certainly, professional surfer will opt for Le Morne. Free riders are commonly seen in Le Morne from June to November as hastening from the terrain offer an almost assured wind from eleven o’clock in the morning. Le Morne is such a wide lagoon to be enjoyed though it is quite a busy spot to ride or launch plus drop. But from February to May, Le Morne is very windless.

Nearly all through the year, the North or North East is very ride-able. Despite it being somewhat windy and so ‘off-shore’ during winter, the Calodyne or Anse La Raie lagoon  provides great conditions from November to January and also in April or May for many days through the week.

The eastern and south eastern coasts have some great places for the real winter, and the wind being ‘onshore or side’, it is less windy on the eastern coast compared to other places.
